Book review.
Stephan Colbourn ‘Robin Hood’.
Macmillan readers. Pre- Intermediate.

Within the genre of adventure stories the storyline often features a trouble, which happens with some people. One of the best examples of this is a story “Robin Hood” by Stephan Colbourn.
Robin Hood came from a town called Locksley near Nottingham. He was born between the years 1160 and 1170 in the time of King Henry II. He did not care about the King’s laws. He hunted the King’s deer and robbed the King’s men. Then he gave the money to poor and needy people.
When King Henry died, his eldest son Richard became a King of England. But Richard did not spend much time in England. He went to Palestine to fight against Saladin, who was leader of the Muslim armies.
This book’s greatest strength is its characterization: heroes and heroines may seem larger than life but they are also deeply human. «Robin Hood» is a gripping story, because it will hold our attention right up to the final page. The book is most moving one at times, while at others it is immensely amazing.
The author tries to convey to us the ideas of good and evil, of greediness and envy, of the crime and the punishment. To my mind, the book is a real masterpiece.

All in all, I’d like to recommend it to people, who want good fun. According to me, I literally could not put it down! The book’s gripping plot and its characterization makes it one of my favourite detective stories. «Robin Hood» is a truly magnificent achievement from Stephen Colbourn.

Casino Royale
By Ian Flaming
Pre-intermediate level
«Casino Royale» is the first novel by Ian Fleming from the series about James Bond. No doubt I like anyone else not once heard about this spy novel. So it was the reason of my choice of this extremely fantastic book.
Meet – James Bond – fearless, brave, brilliant educated and of course handsome agent 007. Absolutely ruthless and flawless. This novel tells us about the confrontation between James Bond and the Russian spy, nicknamed Le Shiffr. The Bond’s aim is to beat him at the card table Casino Royale, a popular game of baccarat, the stakes are high as the risk of defeat, but Le Shiffr falls into bad luck, but luck favors the Bond. But not all, including Le Shiff like to play by the rules, and fascinated by the beauty of a charming girl-agent, Bond gets into a trap from which he thinks there is no exit.
No doubt my favorite character is James Bond. He has a lot of good features: courage, the ability to be cunning and to win in every situation, even there is almost no chance to be the winner. The apparent simplicity of the plot did not prevent Fleming to create an exciting affair, but the most important advantage of the "Casino Royale" is not even that. The main character, invincible agent James Bond became this key to success.
"Casino Royale" is read throughout the world and until now republished. All this is evidence
that the author is perfectly aware that it is necessary to the reader, and most importantly -know how he can give it.

Daisy Miller
By Henry James
Pre-intermediate level
Daisy Miller is one of the most eye-opener and amazing novels by Henry James. The title of the book really aroused my curiosity. To tell the truth I did not read this book later but I knew the plot of it. So I was interested in it.
Within the genre of the novel, the storyline often features a young person in search of his or her identity and place in adult world. The story features the courtship of the beautiful American girl Daisy Miller by Winterbourne, a more sophisticated compatriot of hers.
The plot is very unpredictable, because you can not guess what will be then. I think it is one of the book’s greatest strengths. The other strong point of the book is its personality of its narrator. No doubt the story has a strong moral message: it teaches us not to be so silly as she, I hope you will understand what I am talking about if you read the book.
The main character is Daisy Miller, a young girl of my age. She is young still and she just does not understand anything about love.
All in all «Daisy Miller» is certainly worth reading. I really believe Daisy Miller was an immediate and widespread popular success for James Henry.

Dracula
By Bram Stoker
Pre-intermediate level
Dracula is an 1897 novel by Irish author Bram Stoker, featuring as its primary antagonist the vampire Count Dracula.
The type of the book is horror novel. The scene is set in London. Lawyer Jonathan Harker goes to Dracula's castle to draw up the documents of property in London, but falls into the trap.
Bram Stoker was not the first writer who made the vampire hero of his works, the novel has had an exceptional influence on the folding and promotion of "the vampire myth" and has become the most complete description of the vampire in popular literature up to 20th century. Believe me that the book deserves your attention as it is really stunning.
This book was such successful that many people created lots of different movies and cartoons by this text.
On balance I would like to say that «Dracula» is a really fantastic story with gripping and thrilling plot, that made me read the text all day long. You have to read it as I highly recommend it to you if you want to have good time. So do not miss time!

The Treasure of Monte Cristo
By Alexandre Dumas
Pre-intermediate level
The treasure of Monte Cristo is one of the most amazing and eye-opener books by Alexandre Dumas. If I’m not mistaken it is an adventure novel and I’ve always loved books of this genre so I was glad to see this book in the shop.
The story begins on the 24th February in1815 year. Edmond Dantes, is on the board of Pharaon, which sails to Marseilles. He wants to meet his fiancée, Mercedes. His enemy, Fernand, who loves Mercedes too, misleads and writes an anonymous letter to police. There is written that Dantes is Napoleon’s spy and he is in the prison, where he meets old Faria. He becomes his friend and before Faria dies he tells Dantes about the treasure on The island of Monte Cristo. After Faria’s death Edmond prepares a plan to escape from the prison and finds the treasure. After his escape his life changes immediately.
The book features the hero of the book - strong-minded Dantes. He is also strong-willed as he made a wonderful plan to escape from prison so I admire him. Fernand is one the characters in the story, who is very selfish and I really didn’t like him.
So I see that this book has a strong moral message: Alexandre Dumas teaches us not to be black-hearted like Fernand, to understand other people, not to hurt them and to respect values of the community. I think that characters in the book are colorable and it’s a strong point of the book.
In conclusion I’d like to say that The treasure of Monte Cristo is the greatest tale of betrayal, adventure, and revenge ever written. It is a utterly thrilling and enthralling book, which makes us think about the events of the book. And you really have to read it if you want to have a good time because the story has much to offer today’s readers.

The Secret Garden
By Frances Hodgson Burnett
Pre-intermediate level
The Secret Garden.
The secret garden is a really engrossing novel by an American writer, Frances Hodson Burnett. As for me I have never read any books by this author and so I decided to try. I thought this book is about the garden, in which there was something mysterious. I was wrong.
When Mary, the hero of the book, comes to England from India, she lives in her uncle’s house. Mary is alone and she doesn’t have any friends at the first time. However, she meets Martha and Dickon. Mary also meets Colin, who is angry and lonely as she. One day she discovers a garden, which was locked for many years. Mary finds the key and she with her friends decide to take care for it.
The author is also the narrator of the story. The main character of the book is a little girl, Mary. She finds her happiness through the simple joys of nature. At the beginning she is a very angry person, but after coming to England she learns how to be good. The book’s greatest strength is a highly informative plot.
I am sure the book has a strong moral message: Mary teaches us to be kind with other people and to help them to become stronger. Mary’s kindness is exposed only at the end, when she helps her friend, Colin, to stand on his legs.
On balance, having read «The secret garden» you will be so pleased that you will want to read it again and again. I also believe this book gains readers’ sympathy and understanding and the book is one of the most well-loved children’s books ever written.

«B is for burglar» by
Sue Grafton
Personally, I having looked at the bright cover of the book I understood what kind of story the book was. It was like an illustration from a detective story. Personally, I am fond of this kind of book. It didn’t fail my expectations because I think that the plot is breathtaking and gripping from the first to the last page.
In this book, a private investigator Kinsey Millhone is hired by Beverly Danziger to locate her missing sister, Elaine Boldt. During her investigation, Kinsey discovers the case is more than a missing persons case.
To my mind Sue Grafton’s style is really enjoyable and entertaining. To my mind this book gains today’s readers’ sympathy and understanding because it will appeal both to readers of contemporary literature as well as those who prefer good action stories. Also, there was no love interest to distract Kinsey, and as a result, the book focused much more on solving the mystery. The book was a very fast read written in a very matter of fact manner, similar to Kinsey's straightforward character.
No doubt this book has a strong moral message: the victory of good over the evil. Frankly speaking this book taught me a very useful lesson to counteract the evil in all its forms.
All in all, B is for burglar is certainly worth reading. Having read this book one time it will make you read it over and over again. Generally speaking all my expectations connected with book come true. In conclusion I would like to say that I highly recommend this book, because its plot is believable and entertaining.

«Casino Royale » by
Ian Fleming
When I saw it in the Macmillan readers’ catalogue this book impressed me by the famous name of the author and it’s bright cover. It was like an illustration from a detective story that’s why it seemed to me that it was a detective novel. Personally, I am fond of this kind of book. It didn’t fail my expectations because I think that the plot is breathtaking and gripping from the first to the last page.
The main character of the book is the agent James Bond. He gets a mission from one man of British secret organization. His mission is to stop a powerful Russian man who wants to win a casino game called baccarat. And then James Bond becomes involved into amazing adventures.
To my mind Casino Royale gains today’s readers’ sympathy and understanding. It is an evident fact that this detective story is fairly attractive because of its fantastic narration. In my opinion Fleming’s style is truly enjoyable and entertaining. What I liked in this book most of all is how James Bond is cunning his mind and that he always finds a way to win his enemies.
No doubt this book has a strong moral message: the victory of good over the evil. Frankly speaking this book taught me a very useful lesson to counteract the evil in all its forms.

«Diamonds are forever» by
Ian Fleming
As I have read and seen many films about James Bond I chose this book to compare them with the new once. Besides I enjoy reading detective stories because this is my favorite genre. It didn’t fail my expectations because I think that the plot is breathtaking and gripping from the first to the last page.
Tiffany Case, a cold, gorgeous, devil-may-care blonde, stands between James Bond and the leaders of a diamond-smuggling ring that stretches from Africa to London to the United States. Bond uses her to infiltrate this gang, but once in America the hunter becomes the hunted. Agent 007 is in real danger until help comes from an unlikely quarter, the ice maiden herself.
In my opinion Fleming’s style is truly enjoyable and entertaining. What I liked in this book most of all is how James Bond is cunning his mind and that he always finds a way to win his enemies. I was a little surprised at how straight-forward the novel was, very few twists and turns and double-crosses, not what I expected from the complexity of the movies and most spy novels.
No doubt this book has a strong moral message: the victory of good over the evil. Frankly speaking this book taught me a very useful lesson to counteract the evil in all its forms.
All in all, diamonds are forever is certainly worth reading. To my mind this book gains today’s readers’ sympathy and understanding because it will appeal both to readers of contemporary literature as well as those who prefer good action stories. Having read this book one time it will make you read it over and over again. Generally speaking all my expectations connected with book come true. «Goldfinger » by
Ian Fleming
Personally, I having looked at the bright cover of the book with a man with a gun on it I understood what kind of story the book was. It was like an illustration from a detective story that is why I chose it. Besides I have watched the film Goldfinger and it made me read in too.
The main character of the book is the agent James Bond. When he is introduced to the rich and mysterious Auric Goldfinger, he quickly learns that Goldfinger is a clever cheat at card games. But card games are not the only way that Goldfinger makes money. Soon, Bond finds himself part of an evil plan, a plan which could lead to the deaths of many people...
To my mind the plot is breathtaking and gripping from the first to the last page. It goes without saying that Goldfinger gains today’s readers’ sympathy and understanding because Fleming’s style is truly enjoyable and entertaining. What I liked in this book most of all is how James Bond always finds a way to win his enemies, but sometimes he doesn’t think much about his actions, and as a result, gets into trouble.
No doubt this book has a strong moral message: the victory of good over the evil. Frankly speaking this book taught me a very useful lesson to counteract the evil in all its forms.
All in all, Goldfinger is certainly worth reading it will appeal both to readers of contemporary literature as well as those who prefer good action stories. Generally speaking all my expectations connected with book come true. In conclusion I would like to say that I highly recommend this book, because its plot is believable and entertaining.

«Jurassic park» by
Michael Crichton
When I saw it in the Macmillan catalogue it attracted my attention at once. As I have seen the film of the same title I was going to compare the plot of the book and the film. It didn’t fail my expectations because I think that the plot is breathtaking and gripping from the first to the last page.
The owner of the Jurassic park, John Hammond offers Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler to inspect his new island theme park. They reluctantly agree. Hammond sends Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler on a guided tour of the park, but along the way the electric tour cars break down, stranding them next to the T. rex paddock. A tropical storm is fast approaching. And then incredible adventures begin.
Crichton is a writer of the best quality. Not only does he weave an interesting story with complicated, relatable characters, he also explains and educates things to the reader in an entertaining way. The book is a lot like the movie, but many things are different as well. They are both excellent, and each make use of their strengths to tell a story. There are many wonderful things that are in the book that didn’t make it to the movie, and vice versa.
No doubt this book has a strong moral message. Frankly speaking this book taught me a very useful lesson: not to create life killed by God millions of years ago for the sake of money.
All in all, this book gains today’s readers’ sympathy and understanding because it will appeal both to readers of contemporary literature as well as those who prefer good action stories. Generally speaking all my expectations connected with book come true. In conclusion I would like to say that I highly recommend this book, because its plot is believable and entertaining.

«A Midsummer Night’s Dream» by
William Shakespeare
When I saw it in the Macmillan catalogue I bought it because it was written by the world famous author, William Shakespeare. Besides I have always wanted to read some of his book. It didn’t fail my expectations because I think that the plot is breathtaking and gripping from the first to the last page.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare s most popular plays. William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy about love and marriage. When four young lovers get lost in the forest, the fairies that live there play jokes on them - turning love into hate and hate into love.
It goes without saying that William Shakespeare’s style is the most enjoyable, entertaining and rewording. I especially enjoyed this one for its intricate storyline. I liked the love triangle and the challenges presented as a result. I loved the poetic imagery and the richness of the characters. I always believed that Shakespeare could define his characters better than most.
No doubt this book has a strong moral message. Frankly speaking this book taught me a very useful lesson that in real life love can be turned into hatred and hatred into love like in Shakespeare’s play.
All in all, Midsummer night’s dream is certainly worth reading. It will appeal both to readers of contemporary literature as well as those who prefer good action stories. Generally speaking all my expectations connected with book come true. I like that so many of the characters in this work are able to make their motives count; everyone seems to be affected by another's efforts to manipulate things their way that is why I highly recommend to read this book.

«The Ring of Thieves» by
Richard Prescott
I chose this book because I was attracted by its bright cover and understood that it was a detective story. It didn’t fail my expectations because I think that the plot is breathtaking and gripping from the first to the last page.
James Keating had woken up in a park 25 miles from his home in Birmingham. He didn’t know who he was. He didn’t know how he got there or what had happened. As he slowly starts to find the answers he realizes he is in trouble. Very bad trouble.
It is an evident fact that this novel is fairly attractive because of its fantastic narration. As far as I can judge Ring of thieves gains today’s readers’ sympathy and understanding. To my mind the strong point of the book is the style of the author is truly rewarding and enjoyable. What I like about this book is its happy end. What I don’t like about the main character is that he is a very responsible man.
No doubt Ring of thieves has a strong moral message. Frankly speaking this book taught me a very useful lesson to be more responsible and serious in my relationships with other people.
All in all, Ring of thieves is certainly still worth reading. Generally speaking all me expectations connected with this book come true. In conclusion I would like to say that I highly recommend this book, because it will appeal both to readers of contemporary literature as well as those who prefer good detective stories.

«The Secret Garden» by
Frances Hodgson Burnett
To tell the truth I am fond of gardening. Having looked at the title of the book I understood that it will be connected with nature and gardens. Later I was impressed very much by the description simple joys of nature in that garden.
The main character of the book is Mary Lenox who arrives from India to live with her uncle in Yorkshire after the death of her parents. Mary is a very selfish girl without any friends. And once she finds an old key, to a secret garden which hasn’t been visited by humans for ten years. And then Mary becomes involved into amazing adventures.
Personally, I find this book truly gripping from the first to the last page. But to my mind the book lacks a sense of humour. It is an evident fact that this novel is fairly attractive because of its fantastic narration. The style of the author is truly rewarding and enjoyable.
No doubt The Secret Garden has a strong moral message. Frankly speaking this book taught me a very useful lesson to take care of nature in all its forms.
All in all, The Secret Garden is certainly still worth reading. Generally speaking all me expectations connected with this book come true. It will appeal both to readers of contemporary literature as well as those who prefer good detective stories. In conclusion I would like to say that I highly recommend this book, because its plot is believable and entertaining.

«The eye of the tiger» by
Wilbur Smith
In fact when I was looking through the Macmillan readers’ catalogue the bright cover and the title of the book attracted my attention. I understood at once that it was an adventure story. I am fond of this kind of book that is why I bought it. It didn’t fail my expectations because I think that the plot is breathtaking and gripping from the first to the last page.
For a thousand years, a treasure has rested on the bottom of the Indian Ocean, hidden by currents, coral reefs, and even deadlier schools of man-eating great white sharks. Harry Fletcher, a former soldier turned fisherman, is now being pulled into a mystery by men willing to kill and a beautiful woman willing to lie for what rests far beneath the sea. Now, Harry has no choice because possessing this treasure isn't just about getting rich-it's about staying alive.
Generally, I would say this is an excellent book, an exciting story with intrigue, mystery and passion, which was not over in five minutes, and did not take a lifetime to read. What I like in this book is that you are always longing to find out what happens next, where the story is going to lead you. It goes without saying that The eye of the tiger gains today’s readers’ sympathy and understanding because Wilbur Smith’s style is truly enjoyable and entertaining.
No doubt The eye of the tiger has a strong moral message. Frankly speaking this book taught me a very useful lesson to value human life more than any treasure in the world.
All in all, all my expectations connected with this book come true. This is the first book by Wilbur Smith that I have read, and I think I will be reading another again because the plot of the book is believable and entertaining. It goes without saying that I highly recommend this book, because it will appeal both to readers of contemporary literature as well as those who prefer good adventure stories.

«The Perfect Storm» by
Sebastian Junger
Personally I having looked at the title of the book made up my mind because I knew that it is based on a true event of October 1991 in Atlantic Ocean. Besides I was sure it will be connected with the description of a perfect storm. It didn’t fail my expectations because I think that the plot is breathtaking and gripping from the first to the last page.
A perfect storm maybe only once in a hundred years. It was the worst weather that many people have ever seen. The strongest wind was blowing and the waves were terribly high. At the point the swordfishing boat Andrea Gail turned out to be there. And no one could get through to Captain Billy Tyne on the Andrea Gail’s radio.
To my mind The perfect storm gains today’s readers’ sympathy and understanding. The strong point of this book is its detailed narration of the storm and the description of the behavior of the crew at last tragic moments of their life. Junger’s style is truly dramatic and sometime exciting.
No doubt the book has a strong moral message: nature is stronger than the desires of people. This book produced a deep impression on me and having read it one time you will read it one time you will read it again and again.
All in all, The perfect storm is certainly worth reading. Generally speaking all my expectations connected with book come true. It will appeal both to readers of contemporary literature as well as those who prefer good action stories. In conclusion I would like to say that I highly recommend this book, because its plot is a real masterpiece.
